Potpourri

Odds and ends today. It's been too cold for much outdoor fun (mostly because I didn't pack winter clothes), so I'm piecing other things together, from mansion tours to the library's history exhibit to a lecture on National Marine Sanctuaries--like National Parks, only underwater. Did you know there was such a thing? I didn't either.

I only got a few good shots at the rainforest exhibit Tuesday; I may have to go back on the next Senior Tuesday ($5!).

Today I poked around the waterfront a little and went on board a handsomely restored tall ship.

I think of Galveston as a city of contrasts. I'm probably oversimplifying; more about this later. Meanwhile, I liked seeing a Carnival cruise ship behind the rigging of the tall ship.

Galveston, I learned at a little seaport museum, had a huge shrimp industry in the 1920's and 30's, and it's still important. There are three kinds of Gulf shrimp: the big yummy white ones, and smaller brown and pink ones. I think they use some of the smaller ones for bait. I do know that if you buy them in the waterfront market, they are some good! The industry gets a lot of competition from abroad, and some of the local boats have fallen on hard times.
